Fringe
Solid effort for the Fringe pilot. It's not up there with the Lost pilot. But it was decent. And what about when that dude's freaking jaw melted off his face! Whoa I almost threw up. I did see the plot twist coming - but only by about 30 seconds. Still, I called it mon freur. I'll keep watching it.

i agree - it was ok, but not yet as engaging as lost. i thought it was funny that it opened with a scary plane flight, so like our favorite premier ever. but then the gore...it was too much for me.
Dude. My brain is permanently tatoo'd with that dripping jaw.
It's not clear yet what the show's narrative arc is going to be about. Is each episode going to be like that one - where we're introduced to some fringe science experiment gone bad, fringe scientists and fringe crime-fighting, with it wrapped up at the end like last night's? Or is it going to be more of a long arc - more like Lost than House, maybe? It kind of annoyed me that there was a bookend with the episode last night - that the pilot was so self-contained.
But I hear producers like more self-contained episodes. They are allegedly easier for new audiences to enter. You can't obviously start watching Lost at season 4, but you can start watching House at season 4, since the former is completely contextual, but the latter is non-contextual. I couldn't tell from last night which one it'd be.
i'm not in yet. i like the sci-fi/conspiracy theory stuff only up to a point and usually only when it is the backdrop to a more compelling story. the story seemed a little forced with a predictable twist at the end - hopefully some of that was just necessary preface to get the ball rolling but i'm not sure i want another who's a good guy/who's a bad guy roller coaster fueled by abrams fixation on jerking people around at the expense of a decent story/character.
i had the same thought about the narrative arc - it looked to me like there will be this one overarching narrative of the pattern but fleshed out through more self contained episodes. it looks like it may boil down to another csi/house type show that serves as a vehicle for his wacky ideas - which I'm sure is great fun to do.
