This is not at all a silly proposition. What would happen if abortion was no longer legal in the US? I think the difficulty of making gay marriage a real issue for republicans shows that there's not many substitutes for abortion in terms of political, gravitational pull. So why kill the golden goose? Keep it legal and leave everyone angry.

Heck, when you think of it like that - doesn't the Democratic party need a large part of the US to hate abortion too? The issue is as valuable to Dems as it is to Reps.
