Firefly
I was telling J last night at the grocery store that I had married a bigot. Not in the racial sense, but in the genre sense. That's right. My wife has an a priori disliking of both Westerns and science fiction. I'm talking, she won't watch them. If she wasn't such a sensible and intelligent person, a genuinely likeable human being, I'd just dismiss it at hand, but I guess I'm still surprised when I come across rampant bigotry among the educated class. So, every now and then, just as part of a larger re-education campaign of mine, I toss a little sci-fi or western action on the queue, hoping against hope that maybe her bigotry is simply due to a lack of actually getting to know some of the better fare from those respective genres. And you know what I'm thinking might really do a major screwjob on her brain? Firefly. Josh Whedon's Firefly. Josh Whedon's Firefly was, get this, both a western and a science fiction show. And Pajiba puts it in their "Best 15 Seasons from the Last 20 Years" list. So I'm totally sneaking this on the queue, and she's watching it. I may even resort to pulling J and H into this, as surely she won't be able to reveal her bigotry in their company.
