Dirty Harry vs. Spike Lee

I didn't realize that there was some simmering bad blood between Clint Eastwood and Spike Lee. That may be too strong a way of describing it, but that's the impression one gets readying this interview with Eastwood. In it, he notes several public statements Lee has made against Eastwood's films because they don't have enough Black people in them (Flags of our Fathers) or because Eastwood chose to make movies that Lee felt were inappropriate for a White man to make (Bird). On one occasion in the interview, Eastwood says of Lee that he should shut his mouth. Wow. The interview is great, and is also a small window into Eastwood's contrarian political sentiments and involvement.

"What are you going to do, you gonna tell a fuckin' story about that? Make it look like a commercial for an equal opportunity player? I'm not in that game. I'm playing it the way I read it historically, and that's the way it is. When I do a picture and it's 90% black, like Bird, I use 90% black people. A guy like him should shut his face."

Ouch. I can't wait to be old.
